About LAM-NM

Lutheran Advocacy Ministry – NM is called to advocate for justice in public policy with a particular emphasis on alleviating poverty and hunger and supporting ELCA members and congregations as well as our ecumenical and interfaith partners in the ministry of advocacy.  As a state public policy office of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Rocky Mountain Synod, Lutheran Advocacy Ministry – NM speaks on behalf of the official positions of the ELCA as applied to the specific context of public policy issues in New Mexico.

The ELCA constitution states that the church is to “study social issues and trends, work to discover the causes of oppression and injustice, and develop programs of ministry and advocacy to further human dignity, freedom, justice, and peace in the world.”

Lutheran Advocacy Ministry – New Mexico (LAM-NM) was established in 1984 and is beginning its 38th year of advocacy in Santa Fe!  LAM-NM is the only full-time, faith-based, advocacy organization engaging in our state’s public policy and has earned much respect among legislators and state government leaders.  This is the result of its long and gifted leadership from directors Nima Ward (16 years) and Ruth Hoffman (20 years).

Kurt Rager was called as the 3rd director of LAM-NM, following Ruth Hoffman’s retirement in 2019.
